For over 40 years, Yun Suk-nam has been a leading feminist artist in Korea, making significant contributions to Korean feminist art history through works centered on womenβs lives and struggles. Through her art, she has explored the social oppression and resistance that women have faced, shedding light on their existence within a social context. Yun Suk-namβs artistic career goes beyond merely depicting the lives of women; it has been a crucial effort to redefine and reconstruct womenβs rights and identities.
In addition, she has actively participated in feminist cultural activities and has put into practice the goals of feminism for an equal society. Yun Suk-nam believes that art should not remain merely a form of personal expression, but should also convey social messages that challenge the premises and purity of traditional art. Through this approach, she has contributed to opening new horizons in Korean contemporary art history.

Born in 1939, Yun Suknam lived as a daughter-in-law, a wife, a motherβ until, at forty, she asked herself:
Why was I born?
On April 25, 1979, she chose to begin again.
With a set of brushes and quiet resolve,
she vowed to give her life to art.
From homemaker to pioneer of Korean feminist art,
she became the first woman to receive one of the nationβs most prestigious awards.
Now in her eighties, she still paintsβ
a life that asks us:
What matters more than talent in the making of an artist?
